Larf by Ashley Spires

Read To Me, a new series on Open Book, showcases those magical children’s books that kids will ask you to read many times and that you’ll love reading. Today, we’re featuring Larf (Kids Can Press), the latest book from writer and illustrator Ashley Spires.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Larf is a vegetarian, “hairy, seven-foot-tall, scarf-sporting manbest,” also known as a Sasquatch. He leads a pleasant and solitary life in the woods with only his rabbit, Eric, for company. One day, while reading the newspaper, Larf learns that in the nearby town of Hunderfitz, another Sasquatch will be making an appearance. Flip-flopping between trepidation and excitement, Larf dons a disguise and sets out to meet the other Sasquatch. He’s in for a big surprise.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Geared to children ages three to seven, Larf is hilarious, and Larf the Sasquatch is a sympathetic and loveable character. Kids will have a great time pointing out the delightful details that Spires has included in her illustrations.

WHY GROWN UPS WILL LOVE IT: Larf is a charming story that teaches kids about the importance of accepting others without compromising one’s own ideals. The running jokes in the story (Larf is twice mistaken for someone’s aunt, he is obsessive about laundry day) make it great fun to read with kids, who, by the second reading, will laugh about the punchlines before you even get to them.
