Birthday Suit by Olive Senior

Read To Me, a new series on Open Book, showcases those magical children’s books that kids will ask you to read multiple times, and that you’ll love reading. Today, we’re featuring Birthday Suit (Annick Press) by Olive Senior, with illustrations by Eugenie Fernandes.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Like many kids, Johnny loves being naked. His mother and father, however, decide that he's too old to run around without clothes on, and they try a variety of strategies to keep him dressed. Wanting to be like his dad, Johnny decides that wearing clothes isn't so bad, but that doesn't mean he'll keep them on.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Birthday Suit is intended for kids ages 2–6. The story has a lovely rhythm and illustrator Fernandes captures the exuberance of childhood beautifully with her vibrant illustrations. Children — whether they like running around naked or not — will be amused by Johnny's antics.

WHY GROWN UPS WILL LOVE IT: It's a gorgeous book that's great fun to read out loud, and many parents will identify with the struggle of trying to keep one's child in clothes.
