From our friends at NOW HEAR THIS!:

NOW HEAR THIS!, the literacy outreach arm of the Descant Arts & Letters Foundation, is preparing to launch year four of its smashingly successful in-schools writing program. The Students, Writers and Teachers (S.W.A.T.) Creative Residencies Program is the only ongoing writers-in-schools program in Toronto. Through S.W.A.T., NOW HEAR THIS! sends professional writers into high schools all across the city for10 weeks to lead creative writing residencies; these residencies serve to develop students’ core literacy skills, personal expression, confidence and creative innovation.

S.W.A.T. officially launches in 12 Toronto Catholic District School Board high schools throughout the week of February 22, 2010, with 12 writers in 36 different classes. The 2010 edition of S.W.A.T. seems destined for success with amazing returning writers Devon Code, Desi Di Nardo, Colin Frizzell, Larry Frolick, Rebecca Rosenblum, Julia Tausch and Aaron Tucker. They are joined by fantastic new faces Elisabeth de Mariaffi, Adrienne Gruber, Nic Labriola, Angela Szczepaniak and Natalie Zina Walschots.

Since our founding in 2005, NOW HEAR THIS! has flourished, presenting the talents and tutelage of professional writers to the broader Toronto community as well as promoting Canadian writing and literature through a culture of self-expression, participation and inclusion. Other NOW HEAR THIS! outreach initiatives include the WRITE ON! series of one-off community-based creative writing workshops for both youth and adults and the HEAR/HEAR Reading Series, now entering its second year.
