From Maple Tree Press:

(Toronto; June 2, 2008) -- Bayard Canada, publishers of Chirp, chickaDEE and OWL magazines, and Owlkids Books, today announced the purchase of Maple Tree Press Inc. from Key Publishers Company Ltd. Maple Tree Press publishes award-winning books for children, including bestsellers Wow Canada!, You Asked? and the Canadian Flyer Adventures series.

"We’re thrilled to welcome the talented Maple Tree staff along with their fantastic list to the Owlkids family," says Owlkids Group Publisher Jennifer Canham. "This acquisition means we will have a full team dedicated to creating and selling books — a complement to our own talented staff and well-loved books and magazines."

For 35 years, Maple Tree Press has been publishing bright, inventive books on a wide range of subjects, including nature and the environment, sports, folktales, humour, animals, science, and historical fiction. Maple Tree books have won numerous awards over its long history, including the 2008 Silver Birch Award for Non-Fiction announced May 22, 2008.

"This is such a positive development for us and for the children’s book industry in this country," says Maple Tree Publisher Sheba Meland. "By combining the experience, resources and brand power of these two houses, we will surely flourish in this competitive market. And because we have so many good friends and close colleagues at Owlkids, it feels very much like coming home."

"Both Maple Tree and Owlkids have played a big part in the lives of children, parents and teachers through their publishing programs," adds Canham. "By coming together, we have the opportunity to create even more high quality books that kids will love."
