Many in Toronto are heartbroken to learn that yet another independent bookstore is threatened with closure. This weekend, the Toronto Star reported that the beloved This Ain't the Rosedale Library had a bailiff's notice posted on its door that "alleges the popular independent Kensington Market bookseller owes its landlord $40,000 plus costs." This Ain't the Rosedale Library's owner Charlie Huisken is advising people to listen to the show No Beat Radio on CIUT 89.5 fm tonight for a full discussion of the situation. The show airs between 10 p.m. and midnight.

This Ain't the Rosedale Library celebrated its 30-year anniversary in 2009, and in 2005 it was listed as one of the world's top ten bookshops in the Guardian. The current outpouring of support for the store is huge. Facebook and Twitter are buzzing with suggestions about how Torontonians can help keep the shop open. Join the Friends of This Ain't the Rosedale Library Facebook page to check out some of the ideas and to participate in the discussion.

A great way to help This Ain't the Rosedale Library is to head to the corner of Dupont and Madison on Saturday, June 26th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where Pedlar Press publisher Beth Follet will be selling Pedlar titles for $5 and $10. She writes, "at least half of the proceeds from the sale, if not all, will go to This Ain't." Go to Facebook for more details.
